Back To Nature- These women entrepreneurs are paving the way for a greener future with their innovative seed paper products.

“You are not helping the planet, you are not helping nature, you are the planet, you are nature, you are helping yourself.”- Bangambiki Habyarimana

A Sustainable Eco-Friendly Brand Creating That Ripple Effect

Nayna Bansal who hails from West Bengal and Rashika Bhutra from Rajasthan are not only business partners but also are the thickest of friends. Having done their BBA together in Bangalore and moving ahead with a job opportunity in Dubai in pre-Covid time was something on the cards for a few years. However, post-pandemic when they came back home, entrepreneurship was always their joint goal and especially rolling a business that was eco-friendly and sustainable.

The market for seed paper was booming and having researched the intricacies and conducted a six months trial to validate the success of growing plants through their seed papers, they finally launched their brand in the market. Their ideology “Don’t Throw, we can Grow” sends out a strong clear message that all biodegradables can be recycled instead of finding a way as dustbin trash and beautifully creating waste-generated seed papers. On the occasion of Republic Day, the brand sold one thousand plantable flags with the core focus being educating kids in schools and even the underprivileged kids to use plantable flags instead of plastic flags.

“Once the Republic Day celebrations are over, we usually saw flags being dumped on the sides of the roads. With plantable flags, we want to manage waste, reduce plastic and encourage planting trees. Post the Republic Day celebrations, all one has to do is to sow the flag in a pot full of soil, and with some water, sunlight & care, within four weeks, you’ll see seeds germinating.” says Nayna Bansal from Back to Nature.

Let’s All Make Earth Conscious Decisions

Awareness is picking up to drive change for our planet. Most of the trash that makes our landfill comprises plastic and other non-biodegradable materials that are used for packaging. It is not only in books and papers, but theoretical knowledge in schools, that as responsible citizens of planet earth, we should abandon plastic and also recycle and repurpose the wastes. A brand that implements this theory in practice as a responsible business partner is “Back To Nature”. Founded by Nayna Bansal & Rashika Bhutra in August 2021, the brand sells a whole gamut of products using seed papers which are recycled paper and cotton scraps from factory surplus textiles.

These seed papers are embedded with a variety of seeds such as basil, marigold, wildflowers, tomatoes etc to create mesmerizing eco-friendly products such as invitation cards, packaging boxes and gift papers, acknowledgement cards, visiting cards, brand tags, journals and many more. Their packaging essentials are just apt for enterprises that advocate environment-friendly zero-waste packaging. As all brands aim to go eco-friendly sooner or later, sustainable biodegradable packaging is sure to add a fillip to their business.

The Journey & Vision of the Eco-Warriors

The brand is reachable Pan India and they also get repeated orders from clients in Dubai & USA. Their bulk order for packaging for a candle brand in UAE or soap sleeves packaging order for a soap brand, and elegant pillow pouches for a jewellery brand are great testimonies to the trust and adoration this brand holds. They convert waste into their raw material and help start-up firms to incorporate the seed papers into their tagging. Their unique ideation during Diwali to convert flowers into eco-friendly diyas and embed seeds in crackers too is commendable. Isn’t it great to have plantable crackers, diyas and Lord Ganesha too! Curating such sustainable products out of waste and inspiring people to make a conscious choice that causes no harm to nature is the ultimate goal of the brand.

HATHKALA – Reviving ancient handloom woven garments – because our rich heritage deserves to be preserved

Beautiful childhood memories can lead to something really wonderful. This is how Noopur Chaturved felt inspired to start HATHKALA – a contemporary fashion label that is nurturing the fine art of bringing handwoven garments into the mainstream fashion of today.

Noopur started this enterprise after graduating from NIFT at the age of 24, with a modest budget of INR 50K. It was the visuals of her childhood in Chhatarpur- a small town near Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh – where she used to see weavers carrying bundles of exquisite handmade sarees on their heads and go from house to hose to sell, that got her interested in setting up the enterprise.

Interestingly Chanderi Sarees have a heritage that date back to the 13th or 14th century AD and the idea of preserving something so deep rooted in culture is really commendable! Today HATHKALA is slowly, steadily and sincerely investing in building an enviable portfolio of sarees, kurta salwar sets, handwoven co-ords set, blouses and more.

Handwoven elegance that is timeless… a classic that will never go out of fashion…

According to Noopur, “ The ultimate aim of HATHKALA is to create really minimal, comfy and classic clothing that goes beyond fickle fads and trends. Using time tested, traditional methods of hand weaving and hand printing, the brand intends to create truly slow, sustainable and truly heirloom quality of fashion.”

HATHKALA regulary unveils a stunning collection of slow fashion temptation – hand woven chanderi saree with dabka embroidery, maheshwari bandhni sarees, handwoven fabric block printed saree, bandhini kurtas, luxurious silk sarees, handwoven maheshwari saris with gorgeous, Ajrakh prints, vintage dual-toned chanderi silk saree, chanderi cotton silk sarees, kora fabric saree with hand-block printing, luxurious Mashru silk kurtas, chanderi cotton silk dupattas with beautiful block prints, chanderi silk saree with silver handwoven zari and whole lot more! Upscaling products from old sarees is also an activity that the brand does on a regular basis.

The uniqueness of every apparel at HATHKALA is that it is genuinely affordable and matched with great quality.

In its quest to be more mindful the brand has shifted from chemical dyes to natural dyes like hibiscus flower, turmeric and other spices. It follows eco-friendly packaging practices too.

Slow fashion that is not just sustainable…

Handloom has nowadays gained a lot of popularity among a very diverse audience who are conscious about what they wear. The excting contemporary prints, the color palette, the comfort- all have caught the fancy of even the younger generation. HATHKALA has proved that slow fashion does not mean boring ! In fact it is a way of supporting traditional craft, ensuring a steady livelihood for local weavers and also gives a big fillip to small local businesses.

HATHKALA delivers pan India and has today in a short span of time fulfilled more than 700 orders. Brand expansion via offline stores in cities like Mumbai and Delhi is what is next on the anvil.

The Chikan Label: Shop the streets of Lucknow from the comfort of your home.

Lucknow, the city known for its interesting blend of traditional culture and modern values, not only leaves you spellbound with its architectural masterpieces, rich history of the Nawabs, or lip-smacking kebabs but also excels in the art of embroidery. Chikankari is one of most popular art of hand embroidery.

The simple yet detailed hand work over any kind of garment gives it a classy and subtle look which can be counted under both heavy and simple design depending upon the occasion.

The timeless art of Chikankari has crossed decades of fashion statements with its beauty.

While chikankari retains its effervescence and elegance even after so many years, the fashion world is reinventing this meticulously crafted embroidery art to suit contemporary aesthetics. Launched in 2018 by Komal Shukla and Hardik Deol, The Chikan Label is one such retail brand that’s promoting the delicate beauty of the eternal and classic Lucknowi Chikankari worldwide. Besides, the brand aims to elevate the stature of the skilled artisans of India who are tirelessly preserving this craft through their hard work and unmatched craftsmanship.

Inching towards a shared dream

When two friends with a common vision come together, a startup usually happens. Soon after finishing college, Komal and Hardik joined hands to give shape and form to their entrepreneurial dream with just a modest sum of 15k. Komal explains “I didn’t have a degree in fashion but the passion and excitement for exploring the fashion world was palpable even in those early days. I loved visiting different exhibitions where art and crafts of different Indian states could be witnessed.”

Komal completed her graduation from Lucknow in 2014 and attempted CAT 2015 but due to unavoidable circumstances at home, she had to settle for a Distant MBA program. With a degree in Operation management, Komal worked in a private firm to get an idea about how things work. Within 9-10 months, she realized a 9-to-5 job isn’t a feasible option. “I have my own dreams to fulfill and can’t pursue someone else’s.” says the spirited girl. She worked as a freelancer, writing articles and blogs for many digital platforms and websites.

Hardik, on the other hand, was experienced in digital marketing and website development as he was already working for renowned real estate projects in Lucknow. So setting up a well-designed, user-friendly website wasn’t much of a hassle for both.

How did it all begin?

The duo started off by selling ethnic wear from Gujarat on a third party e-commerce website. Since Komal hailed from Lucknow, she was already familiar with the exquisite charm of Chikankari that emanates from the heart of Awadh. She fondly remembers how her mother and grandmother used to love wearing chikankari, often gifting it to relatives living abroad.

Both Komal and Hardik observed how foreigners are duped with absurd prices when they throng to buy chikankari dresses from local stores. That’s when the enterprising duo decided to take this artistry to a global stage. Soon enough, the idea of establishing a dedicated chikankari label emerged. Thus, the brand was named “The Chikan Label” along with its tagline “Crafting Culture”.

A look into the evolution of The Chikan Label

Initially, the products were sourced from local vendors and artisans and sold on the website. Eventually, the startup opened its own manufacturing unit with its own team of tailors, block printers, women embroiderers, washermen etc. Komal adds “Now we have planned the whole process of production to create eco-friendly and sustainable fashion with zero wastage. We’ve teamed up with 10 different groups of artisans of which mostly were women.”

The main motive behind starting its own manufacturing was to provide the best quality of work, sustainable fabric, easy delivery and returns and most importantly fair wages to the artisans.
The startup tied up with more than 5 shipping companies for India and used FedEx and DHL for delivery abroad.

Overcoming the challenges of machine embroidery

The startup ensures artisans and tailors are paid fairly for their unparalleled skill, creativity and mastery over the craft. It focuses on different aspects to raise their standard of living.

In the age of fast fashion and bulk production, the brand aims to promote slow and sustainable fashion. Machines may try to replace handmade artistry but tthatare some things which even the most sophisticated machinery cannot replicate. The market is inundated with machine embroidered clothes which are being sold in the name of authentic chikankari.

Sadly, even high-end brands and prominent celebrities are promoting fake machine embroidery without realizing what it takes to create real Chikankari outfits. That’s why, The Chikan Label regularly comes up with these behind-the-scenes videos on Instagram to show how artisans breathe life into the delicate weaves to create the classic chikankari. Also, The chikan Label has crossed 100k followers on Instagram recently.

The Chikan Label: Presenting the vintage Awadhi handicraft with a modern twist

It offers a stunning range of short kurtas, titli kurtas, sharara suits, beautiful chikankari Sarees, Designer Anarkalis, Pretty tunics with chikankari work and many many more. Every outfit is a seamless amalgamation of comfort and style.

Online services are available here. The Chikan Label boasts of celebrity clients such as Hina Khan Gauhar Khan Rubina Dilaik, Karishma tanna, Mahi vijj ,Aarti Singh and also many Popular influencers like Komal Pandey, Kritika Khurana, Shiv Shakti who often adorn the brand’s most elegant outfits. While most businesses struggled during the pandemic, this one really came into its own. Insane amount of orders poured in during the lockdown period and that turned out to be a game-changer for the venture.

What’s in store for the future

The brand has already made considerable headway in the national fashion scene. Now, it’s determined to make its digital appearance in the international market. The founders point out how they are planning to register their physical presence by opening stores and participating in international exhibitions in the USA and UK and other countries in the coming years.

Moreover, they are about to launch a luxury fashion retail online for its high-end users only.
The Chikan Label strives to be a force to reckon with on a global platform for its consistent efforts to preserve and promote Lucknowi chikankari.

Paridhan: Go desi in style with this mother daughter duo’s ethnic brand.

India is a land known for its handmade textiles and plethora of fabrics. Being an agrarian economy, Indian cottons and silks have dominated the market. Various handlooms have given India its rich history making it an integral part of Indian culture and attire.

Chanderi silk is a traditional, ethnic fabric known for its lightweight, sheer texture and for its fine luxurious feel. Currently, with fusion of traditional and modern weaving techniques, chanderi fabric is used to create tunics, tops and indo-western dresses. Chanderi sarees are best for summer wear because of its texture.

This chanderi silk fabric can be classified in three types- Chanderi silk cotton, pure silk and chanderi cotton. Colour palette of chanderi fabric was initially ruled by soft pastel hues however, vibrant colour combinations are also available. Chanderi fabric needs special care because of its gauzy texture. With a fabric that is as versatile and well loved, founders Sangeeta and Shravani Desai have curated a colourful collection of chanderi silk fabrics for Indian women.

Lightweight and Luxurious

This mother daughter duo began their brand Paridhan with an initial investment of Rs 5 lakh in 2017. Based in Goa the brand looks to provide quality fabrics to the locals at an affordable price range. Cotton and chanderi silk fabrics are available in every colour of the rainbow which are embellished with block prints. These fabrics can be creatively used for dress materials, sarees as well as western wear.

While Paridhan has created a name for itself, we asked the founders how they began their entrepreneurial journey. “Earlier, we were based in Mumbai and as you know, Mumbai is a hub for all things fashion. We used to look at a lot of fabrics especially cotton and chanderi from the various markets located in Mumbai. When we moved to Goa we also took with us lots of apparel from these markets. All our friends loved our pieces and kept asking us to buy fabrics for them as well. So we realized that there is great demand for this kind of fashion in Goa and decided to start a business of cotton as well as chanderi textiles,” reveals Sangeeta.

Goa to Gurgaon

Paridhan would earlier operate through its offline boutique, however during the global pandemic, the brand had to switch to online sales and close down the shop. “Now we process more than 20 orders per month and undertake orders through our Instagram page,” shares Shravani.

Currently it’s the mother Sangeeta who handles the bulk of the work, however, it is Shravani, the daughter who hopes to expand the brand across the country through its social media channels. With a product as versatile and globally loved as textiles, the duo hopes to reach every corner of the country and even expand overseas with their multi-hued and lightweight fabrics.

These little trinkets can adorn every part of the female body be it necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, anklets and even head gear, making it one of the most coveted possessions known to man.

Taking this affinity for jewellery to another level are sisters Priti Mehta and Dipti Shah who use their creativity and passion for jewellery to create pocket friendly jewellery pieces for every kind of woman. Their venture, All That Glitters is a fine jewellery brand made from 18K hallmarked gold studded with Swarovski stones and moissanite (polki). One of the most unique features of the brand is the ability to customize each piece as per your requirement allowing the personality of each woman to shine as bright as a diamond.

Gold Rush

The two sisters operate through South Mumbai’s Charni Road where they display their products. “We are both from a commerce background and began this venture at 38 years old with an initial investment of Rs 2 lakh. Natural diamond jewellery is very expensive and most people find it difficult to afford. But since jewellery is so well loved by most women, we thought that we could provide the same experience at a fraction of the cost. So we decided to create hallmarked 18k gold jewellery using Swarovski stones and moissanite diamonds,” says Dipti.

Just like no two women are the same, jewellery too must speak to the soul of its wearer. It almost becomes a part of a woman’s identity making it a unique symbol that gives a glimpse into her mindset. In order to achieve this, All That Glitters offers complete customization of its pieces allowing customers to gain autonomy over the final look of the piece. “We strive for innovation and love to surprise our clients with our creativity. We like to think out of the box and design a collection that will appeal to every kind of woman. Be it bold and unique or delicate and demure, you can find every kind of aesthetic in our repertoire,” reveals Priti.

Supporting Sustainability

Since the stones used are ethically sourced, they prove to be a sustainable option for the environment at large. The brand aims to beautify the world with their creations in an ethical and sustainable fashion. “We conduct ourselves in an honest trustworthy and ethical manner at all times. We are totally dedicated to the pursuit of perfection. DHAJCRAFT – This startup is revolutionizing the footwear space with personalised sizing.

There is so much truth in the statement – If you keep your mind open the universe will send opportunities your way! It was the same with Rashmi the founder of DHAJCRAFT and her cofounder Pallavi Jha.

When Rashmi, a fashion designer who graduated from NIFT was in college, there were the handicraft clusters held in semesters and CraftBaazar held on the campus. Here she met and interacted with a lot of artisans from Bihar. While interacting, she was amazed at the skills the artisans had. At the same time however, she also discovered the other side of the story – the artisans did not get employment and if they did, they were paid poorly.

This very point became a platform for DHAJCRAFT and in 2020 at the age of 24, Rashmi founded the enterprise with a focus on creating an exclusive range of personalised footwear.

“There is at least a 20 – 30 % percent size and shape difference between each of our feet. Ready to wear footwear at times can be very uncomfortable. What we do is we personalize the shoes to fit just right.” Rashmi told The Business Press.

This approach had paid rich dividends and DHAJCRAFT was placed amongst the Top 3 Startups in Bihar Startup Conclave 2022 and was also recognized by the American Center as a Top 20 startup from Bihar & Jharkhand.

Footwear that offers total freedom on size with zero compromise on design and style!
