Nature’s Goodness Unlocked with Rakhi Pikle’s skincare and soapmaking workshops

Rakhi Pikle

Most of us look at health in terms of a balanced diet and regular exercise. Of course these things are very important, but what about the products we are using on our bodies? Our skin is our largest organ and will absorb almost everything you put onto it. We use a wide range of cleansers, soaps, sprays and lotions on our bodies everyday while unknowingly exposing our skin to a wide range of unnecessary chemicals, which eventually make their way into our bloodstream. Most of these products are detrimental to our skin and can adversely affect our health in the long term.

With an aim to provide organic goodness and nourishment to the skin, certified skincare formulator Rakhi Pikle launched her own line of natural skincare and cold processed soaps under the name The Green Sage through various e-commerce websites.

“I was seeing so many people around who were fed up of the artificial chemicals in their skin care products. That was a trigger for me and I thought …..Would general public like to make their own cold process soaps, natural cleansers, moisturizers, body butters, facial and body scrubs etc? This question gave birth to ‘Skincare and Soapmaking Workshops by Rakhi Pikle’,” says the founder.

Natural Skincare Is The Way Forward

Rakhi is a highly qualified formulator and has a number of degrees under her belt. Some of them include Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation, Certificate in Organic Anti-Aging Skincare, Certificate in Chocolate Spa Products, Certificate in Facial Mask Therapy. She is also working hard in pursuing her Advance Diploma in Organic Cosmetic Science as well as Diploma in Organic Haircare Formulation.

“At ‘Skincare & Soapmaking Workshops by Rakhi Pikle’ we believe that a good product should contain minimum amount of ingredients which are in their natural state provided by nature. In our workshops we strive to help you develop unique, fresh and effective products to promote healthy skin and natural glow. Our products are made with basic ingredients – simple formulas that work which only include the necessary key ingredients. We only use natural ingredients provided by mother nature; pure oils, organic flowers, butters, beeswax and essential oils. This means Non-GMO, No Alcohol, No synthetic fragrance and No fillers.” explains Rakhi.

These workshops are instrumental in covering a wide range of topics that empower students with the essential concepts of soap making. They’ll learn the what, the why and most importantly the how. All classes are hands on and students walk away with gorgeous handmade products as well as an informative handbook to use as reference for future creating. Formulation techniques as well as  common and useful ingredients, including essential oils, carrier oils, butters and waxes, natural preservative options are covered during the classes.

What the future holds

Rakhi has conducted several workshops. “So far, I have trained more than 50 students in cold process soapmaking and skincare. Due to the pandemic situation people are getting more environmentally conscious and opting for handmade and natural products. Since August 2021, the demand for my skincare and soapmaking workshop has tripled. Due to the hands-on nature of the classes, they are limited to Mumbai city as of now,” shares Rakhi.

After conquering the world of skincare, Rakhi has her eye on the haircare realm. She is pursuing Organic Haircare Formulation from Formula Botanica and will soon be starting Natural Shampoo & Conditioner making. Her mission is to provide expert guidance in organic and natural skincare as well as haircare.

Purveitaa Kapadia: This farming enterprise is following the highest ethical and environmental standards to produce chemical free food that is both healthy and affordable.

Purveitaa Kapadia

From an IT professional who chucked it all away and started an experiment in Terrace Farming with guidance of a group “Urban Leave”, to one of the leading voices in the organic farming Purveitaa Kapadia has come a long away. The challenge was to create a completely natural and organic farming culture for the whole farming community in the village. Initial resistance soon gave way to acceptance as everyone saw the results and also understood the harm that chemical farming did to the farm soil, human body and water table. The high quality of the yield plus the growing demand from customers for organic food has created further growth opportunities.

A farming enterprise with a healthy, organic approach to business.

purveitaa kapadia

“I own a piece of farm land at Wada in Maharashtra and all my produce from this farm is naturally grown. It is genuinely organic farming. In co-operation with other farmers in the collective we provide each and every edible product required in a kitchen,” says Purveitaa.

Most of the things that are sold, are the produce grown on her farm as well as the other farms with whom she has created a working relationship. At times to meet customer demand Purveitaa even ethically sources produce from personally vetted local farms across India.

Value added services like making a mixture of rice and dal, millets and dals, preparing a mix of spices for special unique ready-to-use masala or even interesting chutney and pickles have become a good source of revenue for everyone involved.

Pulses, lentils, polished and unpolished rice, millets, special flours, medicinal spices, and unrefined oils – all these are available with the assurance of being chemical free and manually processed. Gluten-free and protein-rich millet that is now touted as a healthy alternative to maida or wheat is also offered. Exciting recipes are churned out using millet as a prime ingredient so as to appeal the everyone’s taste buds.

Farm labour is a huge universal challenge which the owner has to cope up with and keep the show going. A break due to unavailability of labour is not accepted, as the sowing and harvesting of crop cannot be delayed or expedited. At such times a farmer has to takeover and perform his best.

Purveitaa Kapadia: Building awareness and enabling sustenance

purveitaa kapadia

The main motive behind the current business model is to enable the marginal farmers to earn a living, which Purveitta does by offering them a fair value for their produce. Having served more than 50 customers the future goal is to increase the number to 200 till the end of the year 2021. This is something that will be possible with increased production and diverse offerings, since as of now Purveitta has seen exponential growth with the stocks quickly getting sold out.

Says Purveitaa “As a farmer I would want to tell all the consumers to please come and visit the farm and see all the efforts taken to produce food. It will also help in building more awareness ‘where the food is coming from and how food that we eat is directly in proportion to the health and well-being of human body”. To my fellow farmers I want to say, ‘adapt the old ways of farming like multi cropping vs mono cropping, apply traditional method of farming. It will increase production, keep the health of soil fertile, provide income and offer crop diversity.”

“The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed,” said Mahatma Gandhi, which applies to us Farmers today.

Geeky Bucks: On a mission to transform the start-up ecosystem in India by creating transparency between founders and investors

Geeky Bucks

In recent years, the emergence of start-up enterprises has changed the lives of millions all over the world. India has evolved as a major start-up hub, ranking among the top 5 countries with the largest start-up ecosystems. Being a labor-intensive country with a major proportion of the population in the younger age group, India has witnessed unprecedented rise in fresh, innovative business ventures led by a pool of talented individuals.

However, not all startups are success stories. Some end before they begin while others lose their way in the middle and eventually perish. In India there aren’t many platforms which can provide proper guidance on how exactly to go ahead. Founded on 12th December 2017 and registered on 25th January 2021, Geeky Bucks is a flourishing startup jointly established by three 26-year-olds – Pooja Pal, Avinash Kumar Sharma and Vishal Kumar Verma. It strives to bring about a change in the erratic startup culture in India, creating transparency between founders and investors. The goal is to develop an application that’ll use mathematical calculation to give rating to startups so investors can decide where to invest or the founders of a new startup would get data to improve their startup.

Beginning of an incredible journey

The road to our dreams is long, challenging and unexpected. Prior to the collaboration for Geeky Bucks, the founders Pooja, Avinash and Vishal used to work in the same organization. Having witnessed many failed startups, they believed “We failed due to society’s culture and our own lackadaisical attitude. We don’t get the culture here in India the same as in Silicon Valley in New York. Instead of giving our best shot, we do this half-heartedly on a part time basis.”

The trio thought of creating an app that would provide detailed information and broader understanding of startups, forming a common ground for both founders and investors. This would ensure absolute transparency and steady flow of funds for the startup. Since all three of them hail from middle-class families where the start-up concept is still alien to elders, family support was hard to come by. Undeterred, they went through a year of thorough research before embarking on the journey of setting up Geeky Bucks.

Geeky Bucks: Complete metamorphosis of Indian start-ups

Geeky Bucks is a start-up that intends to indirectly help other start-ups by providing them scores and figures that would fetch them investors for funding. The start-ups are scored on the basis of factors such as

  1. Founder: Experience and Qualifications
  2. Difference between current or year of starting
  3. Growth pattern
  4. Input Pattern

Here, the scores reflect the start-up potential, the kind of investment needed and areas of improvement.

A glimpse into the future

The journey so far has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. When asked about the company’s current growth, the founders said “Exponential growth needs funding and we are looking for funding but we have seen operational exponential growth. Like we were a non-registered group but now we are registered. I would say we haven’t seen exponential growth but growth is very steady and consistent. We are pitching for funding and soon we will launch our app.” While the team is busy working on app development, the target is to reach out to almost 30 million users.

The Creative Lust – Resin Art as Individual as a Customer’s Imagination

The Creative Lust

When Sonali Singh Rao, Founder of The Creative Lust started out in 2018, it was merely an extension of her hobby Resin Art. She was more intent on nurturing her hobby and had no firm intention or an idea of translating this into a full-fledged professional enterprise. However, as destiny would have it, her creations were appreciated and picked up by many and encouraged by this response her hobby on its own got transformed into a business.

What makes The Creative Lust different is the fact that every client has completely trusted Sonali to come up with unique resin art products for their homes or their work places. “My business is all about crazy people who have crazy Ideas. I create things based on my client’s imagination and therefore every product is unique” she says.

Unique, Beautiful and Affordable – that is the special touch

The Creative Lust is a one stop art destination for everything exclusive and truly beautiful in Resin Art. Its product range was started by creating a range of thematic Wall Clocks to replace the boring assembly line clocks.  The idea of Ocean Theme Resin Clock made waves and generated good revenue.  Resin trays with a captivating marble effect on them were also appreciated. A recently made Ocean Theme Table was a masterpiece that caught the imagination and the eye of the market. A current project is to make a cricket set made out of Resin for a museum.

What is so special about Resin Art is that and it is something in which no two results can ever be the same. Every structure and finish is always unique. What’s more is that these are truly designer pieces and yet even the middle class can afford to buy them and make their homes look beautiful with them.

Making Time to Create Happiness for Others

Having started as a hobby artist it is sheer passion that drives Sonali Singh Rao forward. She has set herself a course where she plans for just one month ahead and takes things as they come. The business is growing by completing the order book on time. Another source of funding is the Resin Art workshop which as of now has over 3000+ students. The income generated from this workshop is invested back into The Creative Lust to keep it sustainable and profitable.

the creative lust

She says, “I am thankful to destiny and also for all the love and support that I received from friends and family who have always stood behind me. My goal is to make others happy as much as I can with my Art. The thing which matters the most for me is just the happiness of my customers and the satisfaction which I get from my work.”

ReThought: The startup that helps you discover unique, curated and handmade products from small businesses

ReThought

Vintage Levi’s jackets, hand-painted jeans, crocheted crop tops & clay jewellery; This startup connects Gen Z-powered small businesses with young India looking for unique and hyper-trendy products.

ReThought is a social commerce marketplace that helps small businesses gain more visibility. ‘Shop Small’, an idea at the core of this startup, encourages young Indians to rethink their shopping decisions. The platform hosts trendy products created and curated by Gen Z social commerce sellers.

On ReThought, users can discover different types of small businesses like thrift stores, vintage shops, handmade jewellery stores, upcycled fashion shops and more.

Most small businesses sell their products on social media platforms but the algorithms aren’t always too friendly and they often struggle with low reach and poor sales. This is where ReThought steps in and changes the game, helping these businesses boost their sales and get discovered.

Social commerce: Regulating an unregulated space

Social commerce is a new and hot topic in the market. Most existing players in this space like Meesho, Trell and Bulbul are modeled on social commerce reselling whereas ReThought focuses on small businesses that sell their own curation and creation. While social commerce has grown into a $5 billion industry in India, many customers remain skeptical about purchasing from social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp due to fears of getting scammed.

The team at ReThought takes into account that while customers love the personalization of social shopping, they seek a trustable, reliable and authentic shopping experience. The team ensures that all products listed on their platform are genuine and that every seller is verified and vetted before they join ReThought.

Behind the scenes: The founders

ReThought was launched by duo Adrija and Rohan in March 2021. The founders have diverse backgrounds- Adrija has a design degree in fashion and textiles while Rohan holds a degree in computer science and engineering.

Adrija worked in corporate fashion for a few years before launching her own thrift and vintage store in 2019. Rohan quit his 9-5 job at a tech firm to pursue his culinary passion and started a cloud kitchen service. The duo met in Bangalore while working on a shared project and in late 2020, joined hands to found ReThought.

ReThought: Building young entrepreneurs

Currently based out of New Delhi, ReThought has a pan-India customer base with more than 200 small business sellers listed on their platform. The marketplace, a pioneer in social commerce, focuses on empowering Gen Z and young Millennials to start and grow their small businesses. The founders envision a future where every college student and young professional can channel their inner entrepreneur and monetize their talent, hobby and creativity!

Humanhood: A start-up that strives to enhance the well-being of individuals and pushes them to prioritize their personal growth

Humanhood

“Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.” ~ James Allen

Our lives are shaped by the choices we make. At any given point of time, life presents us with two options – to resist change or to embrace change, to remain just the same or to put in efforts for self development. To help navigate the course of personal growth, one needs courage, conviction and also proper guidance. Launched in October 2020 by first-time entrepreneurs Sakshi Sanghavi and Unnati Shah, Humanhood is a startup that focuses on empowering growth, lifestyle and well-being of individuals across the globe. In fact, Humanhood envisions becoming a global eco-system where every energy that is exchanged is oriented towards growth.

Everything begins with an idea

The dynamic founders of Humanhood were pursuing Masters in a renowned university in Melbourne, Australia while working on the idea of their business venture. They flew back in the first wave of Covid-19 with an urge to bring their dream project to life.

Since childhood, Sakshi dreamt of bringing great value to the society by being an entrepreneur whereas Unnati always wanted to uplift the people around her. They observed a pattern of how individuals got busy with the hustle and bustle of life which had a direct impact on their lifestyle and the time they gave to their own selves or their personal growth. This was the need of the hour especially during the peak times of the pandemic. Hence, the duo took a giant leap of faith and flew back to their home country only to kickstart Humanhood.

“Don’t go through life. Grow through life.”

Humanhood is a brand that ideates and creates aesthetic products that help an individual grow and enhance their well-being. Various kinds of guided journals, desk essentials and journaling cards are available at their stores. These products help an individual get closer to their own selves, their goals and improve their productivity and positivity levels.

Their best-selling self-help product is the Self Awareness Journal. It’s a book of 120 questions to dig deeper into oneself and know yourself better. A lot of their patrons claim that it is not just any journal, but a cheerleader, a companion and a source of confidence. It helps one know why you are ‘you’.

The Humahood products are modestly priced for them to be accessible to the maximum number of people in order to boost wellness collectively. Occasional workshops, organised with experts give its audience an opportunity to experience overall development.

With over 4000 self-growth products sold in a year’s time in every part of the country, Humanhood is steadily climbing the ladder of success. Some major clients who have had a positive experience with this brand are Masoom Minawala Mehta (Fashion blogger), Karishma Mehta (Founder of Humans of Bombay), Shubhika Sharma (Founder of Papa Don’t Preach), Raj Shamani (Entrepreneur and Motivational Speaker) and Praveen Sethia (RJ Red FM).

In the past one year, Humanhood has built a community of 10K like-minded people, over 1.5k newsletter subscribers and have served over 2500 customers.

Humanhood: Plans to grow by leaps and bounds

In the next few years, the Humanhood team wishes to serve clients globally with a store full of self-growth products. They’re aiming at building a platform that grows beyond products and offers services that can help an individual to personally grow in any way they seek. Also, on the radar is to build a team that aligns with the company’s vision and has an equal amount of determination to fulfill it and spread its offerings across blogs, podcasts and many more avenues.

Navah: Get the perfect glow you deserve, with this emerging skincare brand offering chemical-free, cruelty-free products.

“Be good to your skin. You’ll wear it everyday for the rest of your life.” ~ Renee Rouleau

When you care for your skin, it shows. A fresh, glowing and vibrant skin doesn’t just happen by chance. In fact, healthy skin is a manifestation of a disciplined lifestyle, balanced diet and proper skincare routine. So, instead of covering up flaws with fancy makeup and pricey cosmetics, one should invest in creating a sensible skincare routine that would bring you one step closer to radiant and glowing skin.

Launched in November 2020 by Nikhil Jain, Navah is an emerging skincare brand that believes that “skin wellness can be achieved with well-considered, clean products that will keep your skin healthy and nourished”. Made with all natural ingredients, the products work effectively on the skin without causing any side-effects. Also, Navah strives to “use sustainable skincare packaging to contribute towards a better environment”.

Mission & Vision

navah

Navah’s founder, Nikhil Jain believes that the digital world has taken the beauty industry to a higher, more connected level. It’s easier than ever to communicate with customers globally through various types of content, channels and platforms. The brand’s strategy is to increase its online presence through different digital marketing tools, listing its brands in various marketplaces, reaching its target customers and understanding their needs.

Navah: Beauty that is uniquely you

Navah is a skincare brand that offers skincare for every age, providing beautiful & healthy skin. Navah was born so skin can flourish & blossom. The premium skincare range uses only the best skincare ingredients available, thus ensuring that its formulations are of the highest quality and are also skin-friendly. Their products are completely free of nasty toxins like sulphates & parabens. They are carefully formulated using ingredients that are safe for use. Some of the skincare products include face wash, face toners/mists, moisturizers, face serums, face masks, face scrubs and many more.

So far, Navah has received around 4k – 5k orders since the time of its inception. The journey started with 2 clay masks and 4-5 orders per day. As time passed, the brand evolved and grew in stature. Eventually more products were introduced as sale increased.

What lies aheadfor Navah

When asked where he envisioned his beloved startup to be in the next five years, Nikhil said “The company will target to become among the top 10 skincare brands in India in the next 5 years. We will continue to spread the word around our brand Navah by strong focus on influencer marketing and targeted digital funnels. We have thousands of consumers all over India which we intend to take to million in the next 5 years. We will also expand our presence in Tier II and Tier III cities.”
