Take a minute to think about your skin as if it were your stomach. Imagine eating a diet full of processed foods containing preservatives, stabilizers, artificial sweeteners, and filler ingredients like high fructose corn syrup. Not only would you miss out on all the nutrients and antioxidants needed to maintain optimal health, but you would damage your stomach by killing the positive bacteria that helps to absorb nutrients when you do decide to eat a vegetable.
“It’s the same thing on the skin,” says start up founder Dr Rejitha. “If you’re using conventional beauty products with a ton of preservatives, fragrances, and stabilizers, you’re going to damage the skin’s makeup which will impair your skin function and have the worst impact for skin quality and appearance.”
When necessity meets passion
A pediatrician by qualification, Dr Rejitha noticed that her daughter had extremely dry, snake like skin and tried a number of store bought products to fight this issue. However, even after prolonged use, there was no effective solution to combat dryness. But living in a rural setup surrounded by cattle and goats gave Rejitha the idea of formulating her own goat’s milk products which would solve the problem once and for all. So at the age of 45 with an initial investment of Rs 20,000 in January 2019 she began her own natural skincare brand under the name Aloha Skin Essentials.
Soaps made from scratch, food grain oil along with goat’s milk are made by hand and are 100% natural. The brand also offers various body butters which are loved by young and old alike thanks to its moisturizing effect. The Anti Acne range has shown fantastic results on those suffering from eczema and acne. Many consumers swear by these products that are specially tailored for a number of skin concerns. One of the USPs of the brand is that it is steroid free which makes it extremely safe to use and has no harmful side effects.
A Ripple Effect
“After I saw the spectacular results on my own daughter, I wanted to share this product with my extended family. Initially I did not charge them for the products but when I realized that they were fetching good results for almost everybody, I knew I had a great product that could generate a successful business. So I applied for a cosmetic manufacturing license and began manufacturing on a commercial scale,” explains the founder.
Aloha Skin Essentials, at its core, is a brand that aims to provide a safe alternative to store bought creams and lotions that give sustainable, long-term benefits. It does not claim to conceal spots or brighten skin like makeup, rather it solves the problem at its root and enhances each woman’s natural beauty. The brand is available through ecommerce platforms and ships pan India. Since its inception in 2019, Aloha Skin Essentials has served over 5000 customers including celebrity Super Star Mohan Lal. The brand has been featured in leading daily newspaper Malayalam Manorama which has helped it gain traction with numerous customers.
In the next 5 years, Rejitha wants to expand and grow her brand to a point where she can employ more people. She presently has employed two women who help her create the products right from manufacturing, assembling and packaging; but she would like to be in a position where she can employ at least 5-10 more women. In this way the women can feel empowered and can earn a steady income for themselves. “I want more people to know about my brand, the benefits of using natural products and experience the joy of clean and happy skin,” says Rejitha.
